Adult Catechist
A catechist is anyone who engages in faith formation and religious education. The role of the catechist is to teach the Catholic faith and its precepts, both by word and example. A Catechist strives to live out the word of God in daily life. They share their faith and guide their students to learn how to apply and live the faith. Catechists are needed for both children’s religious education and adult faith formation.
According to the United States Conference of Catholic Bishops (USCCB), catechists are defined in canon law as “lay members of the Christians faithful, duly instructed and outstanding in Christian life, who devote themselves to setting forth the teachings of the Gospel and organizing liturgies and works of charity…”
All catechists must be fingerprinted and undergo a Level II background screening. They also must complete the Diocesan Safe Environment Program.
Teacher Aide
The Teacher’s Aide supports the teacher/catechist in the classroom with teaching and clerical tasks, such as individual tutoring and assisting with preparing lesson materials. They may also help supervise and guide students during free time and class activities, especially for students with special needs. They work under the direct supervision of a lead teacher who is in charge of the classroom. They possess a desire and capacity to work with children and young adults; demonstrate compassion and empathy; and the ability to uphold rules and regulations. Attentive to the general condition of the environment and mindful of the impact of orderly, safe, and clean surroundings.
