STATEMENT FROM BISHOP GREGORY PARKES –
October 22, 2020
I would like to provide some clarity on the many news articles that have recently been
shared about the Catholic Church. Regardless of the headlines generated by a new film
about Pope Francis, there has been no change in Catholic Church teaching.
The Catholic Church teaches and believes that marriage is a sacrament between a man
and a woman who are united for life and is open to the generation of new life. This can be found in
the Catechism of the Catholic Church, #1660.
Also, the Church teaches and believes that men and women, regardless of sexual orientation,
are children of God and are to be accepted with respect and compassion, since we are all created in
God’s image. This can be found in the Catechism of the Catholic Church, #2358.
Regarding the topic of civil unions, the Church does not address this issue in its official
teaching because civil unions are considered a legal construct for defining legal rights in
relationships. To learn more about the Church’s teachings, I encourage you to read the Catechism of
the Catholic Church, which is readily available online.
May God Bless you!
